WikiPRO

rebuilding wikipedia for readers who start their research with a chatbot.

problem

Ai chatbots now rival wikipedia by giving users instant, tailored facts without the need to navigate long articles . the platform struggles to seamlessly accommodate both "quick scanners" and "expert seekers" due to a dense, outdated interface . furthermore, the platform needs a sustainable revenue model for growth that does not rely on aggressive donation drives or intrusive ads.

solution

Wikipro is an optional, premium tier that introduces a modern digital experience and quality-of-life add-ons without ever locking core knowledge behind a paywall . the redesign reduces cognitive load through an overhauled visual hierarchy , semantic search for contextual discovery , personalized layout themes , and an integrated ai assistant, wikipal, for instant summarization and fact-checking.

from its inception, wikipro was driven by a need to understand how modern users actually consume information. faced with rising competition from instant ai chatbots, the project set out to bridge the gap between "quick scanners" and "expert seekers," mapping their behaviors to uncover the hidden friction within the world's largest encyclopedia.

to get an accurate picture, i conducted foundational interviews with users ranging from high schoolers to graduate students . by mapping their behaviors across a utility-vs-experience matrix , i identified four distinct user archetypes: fact checkers, explorers, deep learners, and elite researchers . i then tracked these groups through a four-stage research journey—planning, execution, deep research, and post-research.

this deep dive revealed critical pain points. users constantly struggled with dense text walls, confusing link quality, scattered facts, and the inevitable tab overload that plagues deep research sessions . furthermore, there was a clear need to find a sustainable revenue model that didn't rely on aggressive donation drives or cheapening the site with intrusive ads.

using a moscow prioritization framework , i filtered the proposed solutions to focus purely on high-impact features. the final execution elevates wikipedia to 2025 design standards without compromising its open-knowledge ethos . it introduces a cleaner information architecture , semantic search for intuitive discovery , robust cross-article note-taking , personalized ui themes , and wikipal—an integrated ai assistant for instant summarization and fact-checking . ultimately, this creates a sustainable "pro" ecosystem that keeps core knowledge entirely free, while giving power-users the modern, frictionless tools they need.

01

the revenue model that keeps every article free, positioning the subscription as support for the platform rather than a gate placed in front of it.

02

a hierarchy rebuild that lets a reader locate the article, its tabs and its tools in a single pass instead of scanning a flat, undifferentiated header.

03

page-rank icons that tell a reader how broad a page is before they commit to reading it, taking the guesswork out of choosing a starting article.

04

cross-article notes that turn wikipedia from a page you leave into the workspace you research in, closing the tab-overload gap that appeared in every journey map.

05

an in-page assistant that answers the follow-up question without sending the reader out to a chatbot, taking back the attention the market benchmark showed leaking away.

06

ai translation that unlocks the coverage already sitting in other language editions, closing the gap between a topic's english article and its best-written version anywhere.

07

search that reads intent rather than keywords, so a reader who does not know the correct term still lands on the correct article.

08

a persistent summary in the left rail that serves quick scanners at a glance without stripping depth away from the deep learners reading below it.

09

nine preset themes and custom colours, answering experience-driven readers without touching a word of the content utility-driven readers came for.

010

reading presets built on an 80-character measure, applying typographic research to a page that has never offered a comfortable line length.
